Abstract :
A low power-loss, highly reliable dc-dc converter was constructed which employs an ultra-small saturable magnetic core in the GTO (gate-turn-off) thyristor gate circuit. The circuit configuration is given and its operation explained. The GTO on/off ratio is easily regulated through the reset magnetic flux by a low controlling voltage. At outputs of 1 kW or more, an efficiency of 90 percent is achieved; another feature of the circuit is its small number of components. Research to apply the same circuit in high-power high-frequency applications is underway.
