Abstract :
To analyze the magnetostatic energy near the edge of a magnetic thin film under an external field Ho, a parabolic function was assumed to describe the magnetization distribution in the edge region. The result was then used in minimizing the total energy to analyze the curling state near the film edge. It was found that for low applied fields, the magnetic moments near the edge are aligned almost parallel to the edge, and the curling length is long (approx. 100 ¿m); whereas for stronger fields (in excess of 100 Oe), the moments tend toward a perpendicular alignment and the curling length decreases, and at the same time volume magnetic charge is converted into surface charge.
