Abstract
A relatively simple method is introduced to form microspacing between a probe-type head and a Co-Cr/Ni-Fe double-layer medium to investigate the effects of submicron spacing on perpendicular magnetic recording characteristics. It was shown experimentally that, as the spacing becomes large in recording, the reproduced voltage in saturation recording decreases. This phenomenon may be caused by the following: with increasing spacing, the recorded magnetization transition width in the medium is lengthened by decreasing write head field gradient resulting from the disappearance of the main pole-to-medium magnetic interaction.
