Abstract
The authors present a method for calculating the damping and synchronizing torques in multimachine power systems. This method is applied to evaluate the damping and synchronizing torques in interconnected power systems, and weakly coupled and closely coupled machines for different operating conditions and machine parameters. The investigation is enhanced by modal analysis. It was found that both approaches, namely the damping and synchronizing torques and modal analysis, complement each other to provide insight into the stability of multimachine power systems
