Abstract
A selfprogramming receiver has been built for a passive optical network to facilitate flexibility and low cost upgradeability. The receiver automatically adjusts its bandwidth to suit the speed of the received signal. Measurements of the receiver show that it has sensitivities comparable with the best fixed bit rate receivers: -48 dBm at 20 Mbit/s, -43 dBm at 100 Mbit/s, -40 dBm at 200 Mbit/s and -36.5 dBm at 400 Mbit/s.
