The status of privately licensed shortwave broadcast stations in the US is reviewed. The stations are identified, and their reasons for broadcasting are examined. The laws, rules, and regulations which permit these stations to operate in a world of government-funded stations are discussed, along with the technical standards that they are required to meet, and the particular technical problems that they face
