Abstract :
The strength characteristics of aluminium-coated silica fibres and the solder joints made to them are reported. Samples consistently indicate bend strengths >1 Mpsi (6.9 GPa): the results from tensile tests are more variable but comparable when a gauge length correction is made. Solder joints are found to support loads up to 3.63 kg
