Abstract
The authors investigate the preferences of some 2500 scientists and engineers for managerial and technical careers in 11 different organizations. Analyses reveal that educational background and age play a significant role in the shaping of individuals´ preferences. Two distinctly different success orientations are uncovered. These orientations change very differently for technologists with and without PhDs. Results are reexamined but remain strong for different kinds of technical work
