Abstract :
A highly sensitive method for measuring the Raman gain coefficient using short lengths of optical fibre is demonstrated. Square-wave modulation is applied to both the pump and the signal, and lock-in detection is performed at the sum modulation frequency. A Raman on/off gain as small as 0.0015 dB can be readily measured
