Enhanced on-screen displays for simpler TV control

The remote control unit for a TV receiver can be simplified by using multifunction keys, together with a good on-screen display to indicate what is going on. This approach can give a much more natural and comprehensible user interface, with encouragement to try out the many facilities built into the modern TV set. To take full advantage of this approach a high performance on-screen display facility is necessary. The requirements for such a facility are discussed, and new ICs providing these functions are described. Examples are given of techniques which can be used to produce attractive, easy to control, and cost-effective products
