Abstract :
The author discusses Aegis, the US Navy´s advanced shipborne system for threat and battle management, which uses sophisticated beam-forming and signal-processing techniques to reduce the vulnerability of a massive, floating phased-array radar. He describes the operation of the radar system, SPY 1-A, which is at the heart of Aegis and features low-side-lobe design. He examines Aegis´ effectiveness for antimissile defense.<>
