Abstract :
A review is given of certain strategic research issues that arise during work on advanced software for intelligent engineering support systems. The application focus concerns discrete devices and mechanisms drawn from electrical and mechanical engineering. The tasks of design and diagnosis are taken as key areas for the exploitation of artificial intelligence research. A brief discussion of the limitations of existing technology introduce some fundamental issues that current and future research must examine in order to produce intelligent design and diagnosis tools for the future
