Abstract
A review is presented on Japanese research on the fundamental dielectric breakdown of solid dielectrics. First, the theoretical consideration on the basic breakdown process and the experimental work on pre-breakdown phenomena are described. Secondly, described is the space charge effect on the dielectric breakdown, the importance of which was realized from the earliest days. Thirdly, the breakdown of polymerized materials, which have much importance to practical insulation, is treated. Since they have a complicated structure, many problems still remain in this area. However, an understanding of the relation between breakdown and morphology has greatly advanced in the present decade. Finally, recent advancement in analyses of thermal breakdown is introduced.
