  • Abstract
A permanent magnet, series polarised electromagnetic actuator for controlling friction brakes, on fork-lift trucks and other vehicles, has been designed and tested. The force capability is enhanced significantly by utilising flux focusing and optimising the magnetic circuit, while a critical performance feature is that the attractive force developed at both inner and outer air gaps becomes zero simultaneously when an appropriate coil MMF is applied
