Magnetic moment of the 4f8 and 4f75d electronic configurations of Tb3+ ions in wide bandgap fluoride dielectric crystals

Abstract :
The concentration of the Tb3+ ions in wide bandgap KY3F10 crystals was measured by the vibrating sample magnetometry method with 0.1% accuracy. The host crystal exhibits a diamagnetic response, while the Tb3+ ions have paramagnetic response to external magnetic fields in the 4f8 electronic configuration. In addition, vacuum ultraviolet coherent excitation of the 4f75d electronic configuration enhances the magnetic moment of the 4f75d electronic configuration in comparison to the magnetic moment of the 4f8 electronic configuration within the lifetime of the 4f75d levels.
