Abstract :
Films of barium hexaferrite have been prepared by pulsed laser deposition. A systematic study of the effect of various substrates and growth conditions such as substrate temperature and oxygen deposition pressure has been performed. Results show that the crystal structure and magnetic properties of BaFe12O19 are highly dependent on these parameters. Films grown on silicon and amorphous substrates are weakly polycrystalline. Films grown on sapphire substrates with the [001] direction in the substrate plane produce highly oriented films with the [001] direction randomly distributed within the plane. The magnetic data shows that the hard axis is normal to the film plane and that the c-axis, the easy axis, is randomly distributed in the film plane. Films grown on sapphire substrates with the [001] direction perpendicular to the plane show c-axis growth normal to the plane
