Abstract :
Third element additions have been effectively employed in CoCrX alloys for longitudinal recording as a means of improving magnetic performance. In this work, we report on similar modifications to Perpendicular (⊥) magnetic storage media. Specifically, we show how solid solutions of ≈10 at.% Pt in 78Co-17Cr-5Ta ⊥ recording media result in a significant increase in ⊥ anisotropy, coercivity and remanent magnetization. The impact on recording performance is manifested by an increase in pulse amplitude and a decrease in pulse width, combining to yield ≈25% increase in linear storage density. X-ray diffraction measurements show the Pt to be in solid solution with the Co lattice, and it is suggested that the increased anisotropy results from the Pt altering the intrinsic crystalline anisotropy constant of the alloy
