Abstract
The interaction between the solar activity and Earth´s magnetic field, which results in a time-varying Earth surface potential (ESP), is explored. The effects of ESP on electric power systems are discussed. An extensive instrumentation system to measure geomagnetically induced current effects on the Alaska intertie is described. Some preliminary data analyses based on results obtained during the March 1989 geomagnetic storm are included.<>
