Abstract :
The optimal way of searching for a frame alignment word in a frame of data, given quantised, noise-corrupted observations of the constituent symbols is derived. The four level quantisation scheme retains most of the benefits of the optimal unquantised scheme, but is only slightly more complex than the digital correlator. It would be particularly appropriate for high noise environments such as radio links
