Abstract
A new, enhanced capability is presented for the analysis of nematic liquid crystal structures. It uses a 2-D finite element code for modelling non-uniform electric and director fields. By analysing the behaviour of aligned liquid crystal cells we show that a symmetric electrode structure can effectively suppress the formation of defects such as disclination lines in the director orientation
