            Abstract : 
The dependence of frequency chirping on probe input power is studied for a wavelength converter based on cross-gain saturation in a semiconductor optical amplifier. It is shown that higher probe power causes less chirping influence. In a 3 Gbit/s transmission experiment using 120 km dispersive fibre, power penalties due to the fibre transmission ranged from 1.5 to 4 dB when the probe input power was -2.4~-12.4 dBm
