  • Abstract
A description is given of the automatic transmitter identification system (ATIS) as it is used in the US and as it can be added to any existing analog TV baseband equipment. ATIS performance, historical background, and recommendations for its selection by the worldwide satellite user community is discussed. It is concluded that in view of a variety of possible schemes for automatic uplink identification and considering of the advantages it provides, it is recommended that the international community of TV uplink operations agree on a standard for ATIS and that this is preferably the same standard already in use in the US, namely, video subcarrier transmission. Uplink identification will help the satellite TV industry minimize transmission outages, an accomplishment that should be in everybody´s interest
