Abstract
As magnetic disk surfaces become flatter and smoother, problems of head crashes and stick slip will become more serious. For this reason, the authors undertook comprehensive measurements of the different variables of head motion in contact start-stop (CSS). It was found that the head must be prevented from breaking the liquid lubricant by falling forward onto the disk surface, and the head must be made to ride on the liquid lubricant by lifting it backward when frictional forces act on it. The authors have developed a "self-peeling suspension," which operates statically, and a "rearward center-of-gravity head," which operates dynamically; both achieve good sliding behavior on flat and smooth disks.
