Abstract :
A provision to the US Senate defense appropriations bill (which the Senate passed on 17 July) threatens the Terrorism Information Awareness (TIA) program\´s future. The provision states "No funds appropriated or otherwise made available to the Department of Defense ... or any other department, agency or element of the Federal Government, might be obliged or expended on research and development on the Terrorism Information Awareness program." Other TIA-related programs, such as the Human Identification at a Distance (HumanID) program, Evidence Extraction and Link Discovery (EELD) program, and 12 other related programs, including Genoa II, are also at risk. Canceling the TIA program would affect many people because different groups work on each project.
