Abstract
This paper deals with the characteristics of a linear pulse motor (LPM-S88) which was developed as a small-size electromagnetic actuator for a left-side artificial heart. The required thrust of the LPM of an artificial heart is calculated at 58.1 N. The maximum static thrust of the LPM-S88 using two-phase excitation is 94.2 N. An artificial heart driven by the LPM-S88 was capable of operating at 5.5 liters per minute at a pulse rate of 121 beats/min in a mock circulation test. Animal experiments using the artificial heart should be possible in the near future.
