Abstract
Magnetovolume effects in 3d transition metal ferromagnets are reviewed. The mechanism of volume dependence of the magnetization is discussed on the basis of the itinerant electron theory of magnetism. Referring to the results of recent band calculations of bec and fcc iron as a function of atomic distance, quantitative estimations of the volume effects are given. The effect of chemical pressure on the magnetization of iron alloys is discussed together with other factors to determine the atomic moment.
