A critical component of mobile phones and other portable equipment is the battery. This paper reviews the characteristics of the nickel cadmium, nickel metal hydride and lithium ion cells, the three types of cells currently available for use in the mobile communications market. The future possibilities within the rechargeable battery market are also discussed
