Abstract :
Scrambling the state-of-polarisation of the optical carrier at the bit rate of the transmitted signal can greatly improve the transmission performance of long-haul optical amplified transmission systems. By superimposing optical phase modulation onto the synchronous polarisation scrambling we can improve the performance of both single channel and WDM transmission systems even further. The authors successfully applied this technique of synchronous polarisation/phase modulation to transmit 100 Gbit/s (20 5 Gbit/s WDM channels) over 6300 km
