Abstract :
The authors have studied a linear pulse motor-driven artificial heart (LAH-S91) with left and right blood pumps, with the goal of implantation and use. The requirements on the LAH of small size and high-thrust actuators pose challenging problems for the evaluation method. The results of performance tests of the LAH-S91 are: 1). Driving characteristics of the LAH-S91 were calculated using a cardiovascular simulation model. The thrust of the LAH-S91 was insufficient to sustain the life of a human being, and must be increased by more than 10%. 2) The values calculated in the cardiovascular simulations are in approximate agreement with the experimental values obtained from a mock circulatory system. 3) The maximum permissible loss in the LAH was defined by considering the cooling effect of the blood flow. The maximum permissible loss was 42 W, at which the rise in temperature is 1°C.
