Abstract
Presents exactly what the carrier-envelope phase of an ultrafast pulse denotes. Following a brief review of how ultrashort optical pulses are generated, we will cover how the carrier-envelope phase can be detected and stabilized in the frequency domain. This will provide a connection to a brief discussion of the resulting advances in optical-frequency metrology. Finally, we will discuss possible methods for measuring the "absolute" carrier-envelope phase and experiments that are enabled by a carrier-envelope phase measurement.
