Abstract :
A mode-locked Yb/sup 3+/ fiber laser operating at 980 nm is reported. Using a semiconductor saturable-absorber mirror in a laser incorporating a grating-pair dispersive delay line, we obtain reliable self-starting 1.6-ps pulse operation.
