The six invited and 30 contributed papers in this special issue focus on optical micro- and nanosystems. They are grouped into the following categories: spatial light modulators; resonators and waveguides; biophotonics; photonic crystals and plasmonics; optical scanning devices and systems; optical switches; lasers; sensors; and nanoelectromechanical systems (NEMS).
