Abstract :
A novel two-dimensional (2-D) digital filter with periodically varying coefficients is introduced for which multiple shifting and processing of the internal data continue during each input sampling interval. Analysis shows that this time-varying multiple-shift operation is a new structure that effectively implements a number of equivalent higher-order single-shift (conventional) filters. A technique is presented for designing 2-D multiple-shift filters. These designs are compared with similar designs for conventionally implemented filters. The tradeoffs between complexity and design error are considered, and advantages of multiple-shift implementation are noted
