Abstract :
After a brief overview of field computation in the electrical industry, the authors examine the prospects of modeling using a finite element package. It is pointed out that a device at design should be modeled by a generic model that would be able to fit any situation of calculation, which means many modifications. This is a technological knowledge representation, for which object oriented programming brings efficient and new methodologies. A tool is described which allows descriptions of device classes, parameterized and graphically aided creations and modifications, the use of a part/whole hierarchy and multiple inheritance in a high level uniformity environment, and an interface with finite element packages
