Abstract :
For all of its groundbreaking elements, including its trend-setting design, synchronous integrated grid, and high-voltage dc transmission, by the 1980s it was looking like the plant that electrified General Electric and the Albany-Schenectady-Troy area might not make it to its centenary celebration. At that time, the Mechanicville hydroelectric station was owned by Niagara Mohawk Power Corporation, which had been formed in 1950 out of the mergers of numerous investor-owned utilities including the New York Power & Light Corporation, which had itself acquired the Mechanicville station from the Adirondack Power and Light Company.
