Abstract :
The magnetic properties of sputtered Co-M-C (M=Zr, Hf, Ta) films for MIG (metal-in-gap) head applications have been investigated. The Co-Hf-C films had a relatively higher thermal stability of the soft magnetic properties than the other films. After annealing at 700°C, the Co-Hf-C films have high μ(>2000), low Hc(<40 A/m), and high B s(1.3~1.45 T). Furthermore, they have higher corrosion resistance than Fe-Ta-C nanocrystalline films. It is concluded that Co- M-C films are suitable for use in high-performance magnetic heads
