Abstract :
The linear oscillatory actuator (LOA) has very few components and a highly simplified structure, and therefore promises to be simpler and more reliable than present actuators. The authors have developed a compact, high-output single-winding LOA with a design based on magnetic field analysis, for intended application in fully implanted artificial hearts. An LOA that provides high power output, includes a permanent magnet moving rod, and has a simple structure has been developed. After making and testing a prototype LOA, the authors found that the LOA´s static thrust characteristics achieved the values intended in the design. They also determined, at the laboratory level, that the LOA´s frequency characteristics show that the LOA can attain the required frequencies
