Abstract :
It is known that RFe2 (Laves phase, R=lanthanide elements) has especially large magnetostriction. The crystal synthesis of RFe2 for R=Ce, Pr, and Nd is very difficult. The authors have examined various compositions of Ce(R)Fe2 and found some that have high magnetostriction when formed using melt-spinning and hot-press methods. It is concluded that melt-spinning and hot-press methods are effective for the synthesis of (CeR)Fe2 (where R=Pr,Nd). This method needs only low pressure and takes a short time to complete
