Abstract :
Faraday rotation (FR) measurements were made on single crystals of europium-gallium-garnet (EuGaG) at 1152, 632.8, and 543.5 nm in a magnetic field up to 20 kOe applied parallel to the three main crystallographic directions in the 5-540 K temperature range. For the three wavelengths, the FR is proportional to the magnetic field and the Verdet constant V shows no anisotropy, even at low temperatures, within the experimental accuracy. The experimental Verdet constants are compared to different models for paramagnetic compounds. In the visible range of the spectrum, V543.5 may be slightly affected by the proximity of Eu3+ transitions. Magnetic susceptibility (χ) measurements are reported on the same samples in similar H-T conditions. The paramagnetic behaviors of χ and V are compared as a function of temperature and wavelength
