Abstract :
One of the most important applications of phasor measurement units (PMUs) is dynamic stability assessment. PMUs should be placed on the buses which can provide the most effective information for assessing dynamic stability. Usually, PMU placement problem is solved such that the system becomes fully observable. This paper proposes a technique based on singular value decomposition (SVD) to define the role of each placement in dynamic stability assessment and find the best PMU places to achieve this goal. Since observability is still a very important factor, the integer linear programming method is used to solve the optimal PMU placement problem for full system observability. Then, two algorithms are suggested to rank the PMU places according to their effect on dynamic stability which is assessed by the Prony analysis. The SVD of the Prony matrix is an index for finding the role of each placement. The suggested method is tested on the New England 39-bus test system. The optimal PMU placement problem for full observability results in nine PMUs. The PMU places are ranked according to their effect on dynamic stability.
