Abstract :
Soil sampling and in situ 241Am-gamma counting with an array of four high purity, planar, Ge detectors are compared as means of determining soil concentration contours of plutonium and their associated uncertainities. Results of this survey, which covered an area of approximately 300,000 m2, indicate that with one-third the number of sampling locations, the in situ gamma survey provided soil concentration contours with confidence intervals that were about one-third as wide as those obtained with soil sampling. The methods of the survey are discribed and a discussion of advantages and limitations of both methods is given.
