Abstract
The possibilities of employing computers in distance education go far beyond using CAI courseware in a multimedia approach to distance education. Imagination needs to be stretched to envisage a full electronic university. Distance education has a powerful role to play in the current and future education and training of South Africans. The traditional teaching model of the University of South Africa is insufficient to cope with the present and future situation. CAI is viable in a distance education situation, and a multimedia approach such as the one that Unisa has followed could go a long way towards alleviating the teacher and lecturer shortage and enhancing the quality of distance education and training
