  • Abstract
A variable optical attenuator using polymer dispersed liquid crystal is presented. The fabrication process is described and the optical attenuation and polarisation dependent loss (PDL) characteristics in relation to fabrication conditions are presented. The device achieves 12.7 dB of attenuation and 0.7 dB of insertion loss at 1.55 μm with a PDL < 1.8 dB
