Abstract
After the first oil-price shock in the early 1970s, the CEGB initiated a programme to establish the prospects for electricity production from alternative-energy sources. The sharpening of interest in the environmental benefits of alternative-energy sources has added impetus to the work. The CEGB programme includes research and engineering studies on tidal, wave, geothermal, hydro, biomass and wind. The author discusses the prospects for each of these energy sources. One of the most promising resources is wind power. The author discusses this option in more detail including the prospects for offshore wind turbines. Environmental concerns are also mentioned
