Abstract
Diffraction of electromagnetic waves by plane gratings of finite extent is analyzed by beginning with one strip and increasing the number gradually and observing the convergence of the surface current and scattered field to those for infinite gratings. Results are compared against those of structures of infinite extent to determine the minimum structure sizes that should be useful in experimental measurements to obtain meaningful results
