Abstract
A fresh attempt has been made to develop a new algorithm for optimal power flow (OPF) using Fletcher´s quadratic-programming method (1971). The new algorithm considers two decoupled subproblems needing minimum cost of generation and minimum system-transmission losses. These have been solved sequentially to achieve optimal allocation of real and reactive power generation and transformer tap settings with consideration of system-operating constraints on generation, busbar voltage and line-flow limits. The potential of the new algorithm for OPF has been demonstrated through system studies for two IEEE test systems and an Indian system. Results reveal that the proposed new algorithm has potential for online solving of OPF problems.<>
