    Human and societal communication needs are analyzed, and three categories of communication need are discussed: access to people, to information, and to information processing. For each category, a key application or issue that, in the authors´ view, is essential for unlocking the broadband potential is suggested. The focus is on the applications of broadband networks rather than their architecture or services.<>
