Abstract
The authors have developed a highly reliable and consistent method for automated calculated attenuation correction for positron emission tomography (PET). The method is based on estimating the object contour from the emission sinograms. The method relies on a robust algorithm to determine the border between activity and scatter background. The algorithm has been applied to brain studies with a variety of tracers and uptake distributions. The method has been tested in nearly 300 brain studies and shown to accurately find the object routine, regardless of the tracer used and the activity distribution. The method has been successfully extended for use in abdominal studies and with 3D acquisition data
