Abstract :
A method of standardizing universally useful software is discussed using CERN as an example of one such standard which is successful. A two-level standard is suggested wherein the lower level is coded in assembler at each participating site and tends to be subroutines which perform elementary tasks. The second level consists of routines which solve more complex data handling or mathematical problems. Numerical results showing the triple benefit of smaller programs, faster programs while maintaining transportability is given.
