Abstract :
Multilevel convolution codes based on rings of integers suitable for rectangular QAM constellations are presented. Codes performing at similar coding gains to binary TCM (trellis coded modulation) codes have already been found which, in addition, are 90 degrees phase rotationally invariant. This means a significant improvement in channels subject to likely loss of phase synchronisation.
